St Mark’s Church


1793 - Present

A 350 year old church and burial ground that was one of the first to support an arts community in the lower east side since 1900. Friends of St. Mark’s, an organization dedicated to the arts has a strong base of support within the downtown artists community since the 70’s.

This project is an expansion of the themes from the exhibit Activist Estates: A Radical History of Property in Loisaida (2019) authored and designed by the urban historian and architect Nandini Bagchee in partnership with curator Libertad Guerra.

AELES is an evolving resource that can grow to include supplemental layers of the case studies selected and the ongoing survival and futuring intents of these legacies.
