ST. BRIGID’S CHURCH


1848 - Present

Historic Irish/Italian catholic church serving a poor immigrant community for over 150 years. During the 1988 Tompkins Square Park Riot, the church allowed homeless advocates and protesters of the police action to mobilize under its roof. Between 2002-2006 the church was slated to be demolished - an anonymous donation in 2008 rescued the building.

This project is an expansion of the themes from the exhibit Activist Estates: A Radical History of Property in Loisaida (2019) authored and designed by the urban historian and architect Nandini Bagchee in partnership with curator Libertad Guerra.

AELES is an evolving resource that can grow to include supplemental layers of the case studies selected and the ongoing survival and futuring intents of these legacies.
