PEACE PENTAGON


1969 - 2016

A three story office building that was the unofficial headquarters of the Peace and Justice Movement in NYC. The building was purchased by the War Resisters League in 1969 and run as a subsidized “movement space” by A.J. Muste Memorial Institute until its sale in 2016. A.J. MMI has relocated to a rented office on Canal street with some of the buildings tenants.

This project is an expansion of the themes from the exhibit Activist Estates: A Radical History of Property in Loisaida (2019) authored and designed by the urban historian and architect Nandini Bagchee in partnership with curator Libertad Guerra.

AELES is an evolving resource that can grow to include supplemental layers of the case studies selected and the ongoing survival and futuring intents of these legacies.
