LA MAMA FOURTH STREET ARTS BLOCK


1969 - Present

La Mama was founded in 1961 by Ellen Steward. It provides a forum to young playwrights. La Mama is part of a wider theater movement on E 4th street that came together in 2001 as the Fourth Street Arts Block. The different arts organizations succeeded in buying 8 buildings to create a BOWERY Cultural District on fourth street.

This project is an expansion of the themes from the exhibit Activist Estates: A Radical History of Property in Loisaida (2019) authored and designed by the urban historian and architect Nandini Bagchee in partnership with curator Libertad Guerra.

AELES is an evolving resource that can grow to include supplemental layers of the case studies selected and the ongoing survival and futuring intents of these legacies.
