HENRY STREET SETTLEMENT

1897 - Present

Distinguished by its visiting nurse program in 1897, the Henry Street Settlement was founded by the nurse/reformer Lillian Wald with financial support from the philanthropist Jacob Schiff. This center operating out of three townhouses on Henry street was an early advocate for public housing, women’s health and childcare. Like the other settlements, it has weathered many changes and continues in multiple locations to provide essential social services to young and old.
