GIRLS CLUB OF NYC


1996 - Present

The Lower Eastside Girls Club was founded to address the historic lack of services available to girls and young women on the Lower East Side. A state of the art facility includes a Maker Shop, a Biology lab for STEM programming, Alphabet City Art School for visual arts and crafts, Center for Media and Social Justice for digital media and photography. The programming is geared to empower young women and prepare them for future leadership.

This project is an expansion of the themes from the exhibit Activist Estates: A Radical History of Property in Loisaida (2019) authored and designed by the urban historian and architect Nandini Bagchee in partnership with curator Libertad Guerra.

AELES is an evolving resource that can grow to include supplemental layers of the case studies selected and the ongoing survival and futuring intents of these legacies.
