EL BOHIO COMMUNITY CENTER


1978 - 2001

A Cultural Center founded in 1978 in an abandoned schoolhouse. The center was home to many initiatives focused on housing, environment, education and the arts. Run by the Puerto Rican collective CHARAS, the building was sold at a public auction in 1998 but remains empty and in poor physical condition. The historically landmarked schoolhouse is still contested by community members.

This project is an expansion of the themes from the exhibit Activist Estates: A Radical History of Property in Loisaida (2019) authored and designed by the urban historian and architect Nandini Bagchee in partnership with curator Libertad Guerra.

AELES is an evolving resource that can grow to include supplemental layers of the case studies selected and the ongoing survival and futuring intents of these legacies.
