COOPER SQUARE MHA


1959 - Present

Cooperatively owned housing created on renovated buildings through the sustained efforts of the Cooper Square Committee. The Mutual Housing Association aims at perpetual affordability via restrictions on resale prices. Since 1994 the land on which the buildings stand has been owned and managed by the Cooper Square Community Land Trust, the oldest in NYC.

This project is an expansion of the themes from the exhibit Activist Estates: A Radical History of Property in Loisaida (2019) authored and designed by the urban historian and architect Nandini Bagchee in partnership with curator Libertad Guerra.

AELES is an evolving resource that can grow to include supplemental layers of the case studies selected and the ongoing survival and futuring intents of these legacies.
