CHRISTADORAHOUSE

Built 1928

The16-story settlement house was an innovative building of its time with a swimming pool, gymnasium and housing to accommodate and educate young women in the neighborhood. In 1948, the building was sold to the city and by the 60’s it came to be known as a place that housed many movement groups such as the Black Panthers/ Young Lords. In 1986 it was converted to condominiums and was percieved as a visible symbol of gentrification overlooking Tompkins Square Park.
