BOYS CLUB NEW YORK


1901 - 2019

The building on Avenue A was constructed as the Boys’ Club with ample community space, two gymnasiums, a swimming pool in 1901. Since then, it has served nearly one million youngsters, offering athletic, academic, and arts programs for its roughly 300 members. Based on a board decision, the building was sold in 2019 to an anonymous developer who intends to ostensibly AVENUE A E 10TH ST. E 11TH ST. maintain it as a community facility.

This project is an expansion of the themes from the exhibit Activist Estates: A Radical History of Property in Loisaida (2019) authored and designed by the urban historian and architect Nandini Bagchee in partnership with curator Libertad Guerra.

AELES is an evolving resource that can grow to include supplemental layers of the case studies selected and the ongoing survival and futuring intents of these legacies.
