BOWERY MISSION


1879 - 1909 (at shown location)  

A faith based charitable organization that has served homeless and hungry New Yorkers since the 1870s, when the neighborhood around the Bowery came to define the term “skid row.” Today, The Bowery Mission runs a food and shelter program on the Bowery but has also expanded its operation to other “campuses” in the city.

This project is an expansion of the themes from the exhibit Activist Estates: A Radical History of Property in Loisaida (2019) authored and designed by the urban historian and architect Nandini Bagchee in partnership with curator Libertad Guerra.

AELES is an evolving resource that can grow to include supplemental layers of the case studies selected and the ongoing survival and futuring intents of these legacies.
