ABC NO RIO


1980 - Present

A collectively-run center for art and activism. Founded in 1980 by politically motivated artists in a tenement at 156 Rivington. The building was demolished in 2018 and is slated to be re-built as a new community art center. ABC No Rio (the institution) is functioning in exile. Their offices and zine library have been temporarily located at The Clemente during the construction of their new building for projects, programs and operations.

This project is an expansion of the themes from the exhibit Activist Estates: A Radical History of Property in Loisaida (2019) authored and designed by the urban historian and architect Nandini Bagchee in partnership with curator Libertad Guerra.

AELES is an evolving resource that can grow to include supplemental layers of the case studies selected and the ongoing survival and futuring intents of these legacies.
